What does Matthew 20:23 mean?
Jesus is responding to James and John, who have just asked him for the best seats in his kingdom. He's telling them that yes, they will share deeply in his suffering (the "cup" and "baptism" are metaphors for the pain he's about to endure), but he can't promise them positions of honor or power, because those rewards aren't his to hand out like prizes. What makes this striking is that Jesus isn't being cold or dismissive. He's actually affirming their willingness to suffer with him, even as he redirects their ambition away from status. The real invitation isn't to power, but to faithfulness through hardship.
