What does Matthew 2:15 mean?
When Joseph fled to Egypt with Jesus and Mary to escape Herod's threats, Matthew saw this as fulfilling an ancient prophecy. The quote comes from Hosea 11:1, where God originally spoke about calling the nation of Israel out of Egyptian slavery during the exodus. Matthew recognized a deeper pattern: just as God had rescued his people Israel long ago, so too was he protecting Jesus, who would become the true fulfillment of Israel's calling and purpose. This isn't Matthew claiming the prophet Hosea was directly predicting Jesus' trip to Egypt, but rather seeing how God's protective love echoes across history.
