What does Matthew 19:4 mean?

Jesus is reminding his questioners to look back at the creation story itself, where God made humans in two complementary forms, male and female, both bearing God's image. He's grounding an important conversation about marriage and relationships in what was there from the very start, not in later customs or assumptions. When we're confused about what God intended for us, he's saying, it helps to return to the beginning and see what was built into creation itself. This simple statement carries deep meaning: God made difference itself, and that difference was intentional and good.
