What does Matthew 19:3 mean?

The religious leaders here aren't genuinely seeking wisdom, they're setting a trap. Divorce was a heated topic in first-century Judaism, with different teachers holding opposing views, so asking Jesus to take a side would leave him open to criticism from one group or another. What makes this question interesting is what it reveals about how we sometimes approach faith: we ask "what's allowed?" when we might need to ask "what's right?" Jesus will respond by pointing them back to God's original design for marriage, suggesting that legal permission and God's intention aren't always the same thing. For anyone wrestling with hard relational questions, that distinction still matters today.
