Matthew 19:21
“Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.””
What does Matthew 19:21 mean?
Jesus is speaking to a wealthy young man who has asked what it takes to truly follow him. The challenge to sell his possessions and give to the poor isn't a rule for everyone, but rather exposes what this particular person is clinging to instead of God. Jesus is saying that wholehearted devotion to him means being willing to let go of whatever we hold most tightly, whether that's money, status, comfort, or security. The promise of "treasure in heaven" isn't about earning points through sacrifice. It's about the freedom and fulfillment that comes when we stop letting material things control us and start living for something that actually lasts. When we genuinely follow Jesus, we find ourselves richer in the ways that matter most, even if our bank accounts look different.
