What does Matthew 18:9 mean?
Jesus is using extreme, vivid language here to make a serious point about removing anything that pulls you away from following him, no matter how precious it seems. He's not literally telling you to harm yourself, but rather to treat spiritual threats with the urgency and decisiveness you'd use in a physical emergency. If something you love to look at, think about, or pursue is genuinely leading you away from God, Jesus says it's worth losing that thing to keep your soul intact. The underlying message is about priorities and radical honesty: what seems like such a loss in the moment (giving up a habit, relationship, ambition, or pleasure) is actually a gain when weighed against your spiritual health. He's speaking to people in hard seasons especially, acknowledging that sometimes following God means real sacrifice and discomfort, not because God enjoys our pain, but because what we're clinging to is hurting us more than it helps.
