“Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
What does Matthew 18:4 mean?
Jesus is teaching his followers that greatness in God's eyes works nothing like greatness in the world. A child doesn't worry about status, doesn't demand recognition, and doesn't protect their pride. That kind of openness, trust, and freedom from ego is what Jesus calls truly great. When we let go of our need to be impressive or in control, we actually become more open to God's work in us and more genuinely connected to others. It's an invitation to stop performing and striving, and instead to approach God's kingdom with the same humble, dependent spirit a small child brings to life.
