What does Matthew 18:34 mean?
This verse concludes Jesus's parable about an unforgiving servant. A king forgave a servant an enormous debt, but that same servant then refused to forgive a much smaller debt owed to him by a fellow servant. When the king discovered this cruelty, his anger was kindled, and he withdrew his mercy, returning the servant to prison until the debt could be repaid. Jesus tells this story to show his disciples what happens when we refuse to extend the forgiveness we ourselves have received. The "tormentors" represent the consequences and suffering that come from holding onto bitterness and unforgiveness. The point isn't that God punishes us forever, but rather that when we cling to grudges, we cut ourselves off from the grace we've been given and create our own inner prison. It's a sobering reminder that forgiveness isn't optional for those who've experienced grace, but the necessary response that keeps us living in freedom.
