What does Matthew 18:33 mean?
This question comes at the end of Jesus' parable about a servant who was forgiven an enormous debt by his king, but then refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him far less. The king's question cuts right to the heart of the matter: if you've experienced forgiveness, how can you turn around and withhold it from someone else? Jesus uses this parable to show us something about how grace works in our lives. When we've been forgiven much (and all of us have, in different ways), that experience should reshape how we treat others. It's not about earning brownie points with God, but about letting mercy actually change us. The king isn't being rhetorical here; he's genuinely asking why the servant couldn't extend the same compassion he'd received. For many of us, this question stings a little when we recognize times we've done exactly that.
