Matthew 18:15
““If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.”
What does Matthew 18:15 mean?
When someone hurts us, our first instinct is often to talk about it with anyone who will listen, or to avoid the person entirely. Jesus offers a different path here: go directly to them, privately, and speak honestly about what happened. This isn't about confrontation for its own sake, but about restoration, which is why Jesus calls it "gaining back your brother." The quiet, one-on-one conversation matters because it gives the other person a chance to understand your hurt without shame or defensiveness creeping in through a crowd. It also protects their dignity. If they hear you out and acknowledge the hurt, you've done something beautiful: you've mended a relationship rather than let it fester or fracture your community. This is what Jesus means by gaining them back, not winning an argument, but rebuilding trust.
