Matthew 17:16
“So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.””
What does Matthew 17:16 mean?
The father of a demon-possessed boy has just brought his son to Jesus' disciples while Jesus was away on a mountain with Peter, James, and John. Despite the disciples' genuine faith and previous experiences casting out demons, they found themselves unable to help this particular case, which left the boy's father frustrated and disappointed. This moment shows that spiritual power isn't automatic, even for those who follow Jesus—sometimes deeper faith, prayer, or humility is required to address our deepest struggles. When Jesus returns and hears this, he responds with compassion and accomplishes what the disciples couldn't, teaching them (and us) that there are limits to what we can do on our own strength.
