What does Matthew 17:13 mean?

The disciples have just heard Jesus talk about someone who will suffer and be rejected before the Son of Man rises from the dead. They suddenly realize Jesus was describing what happened to John the Baptist, who was arrested and executed by King Herod. This moment of understanding shows them that John's violent death was a sign of what Jesus himself would face. It's a sobering recognition that following Jesus might lead to suffering, not earthly triumph, and that the pattern of rejection had already begun before Jesus' own ministry reached its climax.
