Matthew 17:12
“but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.””
What does Matthew 17:12 mean?
Jesus is telling his disciples that John the Baptist was the one prophets had said would come before the Messiah, preparing people's hearts. John came, but people didn't recognize his significance and treated him cruelly (he was imprisoned and beheaded). Jesus is warning them that he himself will face the same rejection and suffering at the hands of those who refuse to see who he really is. This hits hard because it shows Jesus wasn't blindsided by what was coming. He knew that truth often gets rejected, and that those who challenge the status quo face consequences. For anyone walking through misunderstanding or rejection for doing what's right, Jesus is saying: I know how this feels, and I went through it too.
