What does Matthew 17:10 mean?
The disciples are asking Jesus about a widely held expectation in Jewish tradition: that the prophet Elijah would return before the Messiah arrived. The scribes, who were the Bible scholars of that time, taught this based on the final verses of the Old Testament, which promised that Elijah would come to prepare the way. Since Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah but Elijah hadn't visibly appeared, the disciples were genuinely confused about how the pieces fit together. Jesus goes on to explain that John the Baptist fulfilled this role in spirit, preparing hearts for Jesus' arrival, even though he wasn't literally Elijah reincarnated. It's a moment where the disciples are wrestling with how the old promises actually play out in real life, rather than exactly as people expected.
