“Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.””
What does Matthew 16:6 mean?
Jesus warns his disciples to be on guard against the attitudes and teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious leaders of his day. He uses "yeast" as a picture because, just like a small amount of yeast spreads through an entire batch of dough, bad ideas and harmful ways of thinking can quietly spread through your heart and mind if you're not careful. The Pharisees and Sadducees were focused on outward religious performance and rigid rules rather than genuine faith and love for God, and Jesus saw this as spiritually dangerous. He's essentially calling his followers to think critically about what they're absorbing from those around them and to stay rooted in authentic faith instead.
