What does Matthew 16:18 mean?
Jesus is making a foundational promise to Peter, whose name actually means "rock" or "stone." There's a wordplay here: Peter becomes the rock upon which Jesus will build his church, giving him a role of spiritual leadership and responsibility. The image of gates of Hades not prevailing suggests that death, darkness, and the forces of evil won't be able to destroy or overcome what Jesus is building, no matter how difficult things become for his followers.
