What does Matthew 16:12 mean?
Jesus had just warned his disciples to "beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees," and at first they thought he was scolding them about forgetting bread for their journey. But Jesus was speaking about something far more dangerous than a practical grocery problem. He meant that the teachings and attitudes of these religious leaders were like yeast—small but pervasive, spreading through everything and corrupting it from within. The disciples eventually caught on that he was talking about spiritual contamination, not physical food. It's a gentle reminder that sometimes we can miss what someone is really saying to us if we're stuck thinking on a surface level. Jesus cared about protecting his followers from ideas that would mislead them and pull them away from truth, which he saw as a much greater threat than an empty stomach.
