What does Matthew 16:1 mean?
The religious leaders here weren't genuinely curious about Jesus, but were setting a trap. They wanted him to prove himself with a dramatic miracle from the sky, perhaps hoping he'd fail and lose credibility with his growing crowd of followers. This kind of "testing" was really about doubt dressed up as a request, the spiritual equivalent of someone saying "prove it" when they've already decided not to believe no matter what you show them. Jesus consistently refused these demands because faith that depends entirely on spectacular signs misses the point of actually trusting and following him.
