What does Matthew 14:17 mean?
The disciples are facing an impossible situation: thousands of hungry people, nowhere to buy food, and nearly nothing in their possession. When Jesus asks how much food they have, their answer is almost embarrassed, as if five loaves and two fish are so inadequate they're barely worth mentioning. What's striking is that they state the obvious problem without yet understanding what Jesus is about to do. Sometimes when we're overwhelmed by need, all we can see is our own lack, not what becomes possible when we bring even our small resources to Jesus and trust him with them.
