What does Matthew 13:50 mean?
Jesus is describing the final judgment, where those who have rejected God will be separated from his kingdom. "Furnace of fire" is his image for complete separation from God's presence, and "weeping and gnashing of teeth" captures both the sorrow and the anger, regret, or desperation of that reality. This comes at the end of a parable about a fishing net that catches all kinds of fish, good and bad, only to be sorted at the end. Jesus is saying that judgment will come, and it will be decisive. The graphic language isn't meant to satisfy curiosity about hell's mechanics, but to emphasize how seriously he takes the choices we make about following him in this life.
