What does Matthew 13:40 mean?

Jesus is describing what happens at the end of time through a farming image his listeners would have recognized. Just as farmers separate worthless weeds from valuable grain and burn what's useless, God will ultimately separate people according to how they've lived and what they've chosen to value. It's a sobering picture, but it's meant to remind us that our choices matter and that God takes justice seriously. The point isn't to terrify us into obedience, but to help us understand that there are real consequences to how we live, and real hope for those who align themselves with God.
