What does Matthew 13:4 mean?

In this opening to Jesus' parable, a farmer scatters seed as he walks, but some falls on hard, packed ground where people travel. Those seeds never have a chance to take root because birds quickly eat them up. Jesus uses this everyday farming scene to show how the message of God's kingdom lands on different kinds of hearts, and some people dismiss or forget it almost immediately, just like seeds that never get the chance to grow. It's a gentle way of describing how life's distractions and hardness of heart can prevent God's word from taking any real hold in us.
