What does Matthew 13:38 mean?
In this parable, Jesus is explaining what he meant in the verses just before it. The "field" represents all of human society, and the "good seed" are people who belong to God's Kingdom, while the "darnel weeds" are people who have turned away from God and aligned themselves with evil. Jesus isn't saying this to make us judgmental, but to help us understand that good and evil coexist in our world, and we can't always tell by looking who belongs to which group. The striking part of his teaching comes next, when he says not to pull up the weeds ourselves, but to let God sort it all out at the end—a reminder that our job is to focus on our own faith and growth, not to condemn others.
