“The servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where did these darnel weeds come from?’”
What does Matthew 13:27 mean?
The servants here are confused and troubled, much like we might be when life takes unexpected turns. They planted good seed, yet somehow weeds have grown up alongside it, and they're asking their master how this happened. It's a natural human response to confusion: when something goes wrong, we want to know the source and who's responsible. Jesus uses this moment to reflect something true about our own experience. Sometimes we do everything right and still face opposition, difficulty, or the presence of things we never chose. The servants' question mirrors questions many of us ask God: "I've tried to do good, so why is there so much wrong here?" The answer Jesus gives (in the verses that follow) involves patience and trust that there's a larger story unfolding than what we can see in the moment.
