Matthew 13:2
βGreat multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach.β
What does Matthew 13:2 mean?
Jesus had drawn such a large crowd that he needed to create distance between himself and the people in order to teach them. By sitting in a boat just offshore, he could speak to everyone gathered on the beach without being overwhelmed or separated into small groups. It's a practical detail that also carries deeper meaning: even as he physically distanced himself, he remained present and accessible to all who came to listen. The image suggests both the hunger people had for his words and his willingness to meet them where they were, adjusting his circumstances to reach more of them.
