What does Matthew 13:11 mean?

Jesus is explaining why he teaches in parables, and it's both comforting and challenging. To his closest followers, he's saying that understanding God's kingdom and purposes comes as a gift, not something earned through intelligence or effort alone. There's real grace in that promise, especially when faith feels confusing. But he's also being honest: the same teaching that opens doors for some people closes them for others. Those who aren't genuinely seeking, who have hardened themselves against God's message, won't receive that inner understanding. It's not that Jesus is hiding truth to punish people, but rather that spiritual insight requires openness. We have to want to understand and follow him for the deeper meaning of his words to click into place.
