What does Matthew 12:39 mean?
Jesus is responding to people who want him to prove himself through a dramatic miracle. He's frustrated because they're spiritually unfaithful (he calls them "adulterous"), always looking for the next impressive thing rather than actually trusting him. The "sign of Jonah" points to Jesus's own resurrection: just as Jonah spent three days in the fish's belly before being restored, Jesus will spend three days in the grave before rising again. In other words, the greatest proof of who Jesus is will come through his death and resurrection, not through flashy displays. If we're honest about our own faith, this hits home. We too sometimes want easy answers or undeniable proof before we'll believe, when what we're really being invited to do is trust him through the uncertain middle parts of life.
