What does Matthew 12:38 mean?
The religious leaders here are basically asking Jesus to prove himself with a miracle, as if one hadn't already been happening around them. They'd likely seen or heard of healings and other wonders, but they wanted a dramatic, undeniable sign on their own terms, something so clear that they couldn't dispute it. There's a stubborn quality to this request, a demand for evidence before they'd be willing to believe. Jesus's response (which follows in the next verses) reveals the real issue: no sign would satisfy hearts already determined not to trust him.
