“The good man out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.”
What does Matthew 12:35 mean?
What flows out of us comes from what's stored inside. Jesus uses the image of a treasury, a place where we keep our most valuable things, to say that our words and actions reveal what we're genuinely holding onto in our hearts. If we've filled ourselves with kindness, wisdom, and love, those things naturally overflow into how we treat people. If we're harboring bitterness, selfishness, or fear, that's what will leak out too. This isn't meant to shame you if you're struggling with what comes out of you right now. Rather, it's an invitation to pay attention to what you're taking in and dwelling on, because those things matter. What we choose to read, listen to, think about, and believe gradually shapes what becomes available to us when life squeezes us hard. The good news is that we're not stuck with what's in our treasure today.
