Matthew 12:32
“Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that which is to come.”
What does Matthew 12:32 mean?
This verse captures something that troubled many faithful people through the centuries, but it makes more sense when you understand what Jesus is addressing in context. He's speaking to people who've just witnessed him heal someone and are attributing his power to evil forces instead of recognizing God's work. The real issue isn't careless words, but a hardened heart that refuses to acknowledge God's goodness and truth, even when confronted with it directly. Forgiveness is always available to us, even for speaking wrongly about Jesus himself. But rejecting the Holy Spirit's testimony to what is true and good is different, because the Spirit is what moves us toward repentance in the first place. When someone persistently refuses to recognize truth and goodness as they're revealed, they cut themselves off from the very thing that could heal them. It's less like God refusing to forgive and more like someone holding their ears shut against an offer of help.
