What does Matthew 12:3 mean?
Jesus is reminding the religious leaders of a story they should know well, one that shows how need sometimes overrides strict rules. David, on the run and desperate for food, ate sacred bread from the temple that was technically reserved only for priests, and no one condemned him for it. Jesus is gently challenging the Pharisees' rigid interpretation of God's law by pointing to their own scriptures, which show that compassion and survival matter more than performing rules perfectly. It's a way of saying: if you honor David for breaking the letter of the law to meet a real human need, why are you condemning my disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath when they're hungry?
