“But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him, “Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.””
What does Matthew 12:2 mean?
The disciples had been picking grain as they walked through a field on the Sabbath, and the Pharisees saw this as breaking the law. According to their strict interpretation of Scripture, harvesting (even casually) was forbidden work on the Sabbath, which was meant to be a day of complete rest. What's important to understand is that the Pharisees weren't trying to protect genuine holiness, but rather enforcing their own complicated rulebook that had grown far beyond what Scripture originally commanded. Jesus is about to show them that compassion and human need actually matter more than rigid rule-keeping, and that they've lost sight of what the Sabbath was really for.
