What does Matthew 11:17 mean?
Jesus is describing people who refuse to respond no matter what tone is set for them. He's talking about religious critics of his time who found fault whether he celebrated life with others (playing the flute, dancing) or grieved with them. They wouldn't accept him either way because they'd already decided he didn't fit their expectations of what God's representative should look like. It's a picture of hearts closed to genuine connection and growth, the kind that will always find a reason to say no.
