What does Matthew 11:16 mean?
Jesus is frustrated with the people around him, and he uses a vivid picture to show why. He compares his generation to children in a marketplace who are playing a game where nothing satisfies anyone, no matter what tune is played. Some won't dance if the music is cheerful, others won't mourn if it's sad, and the children just keep complaining. The point is that the crowds had become so resistant and closed-off that nothing, including Jesus himself, could reach them or change their minds. They had reasons to dismiss everyone and everything. Jesus wasn't being mean, but honest, about how hard it is to reach people who've already decided not to listen.
