“If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.”
What does Matthew 11:14 mean?
Jesus is telling his disciples that John the Baptist fulfilled the role Elijah was expected to play in preparing people's hearts for God's coming. The Jewish tradition anticipated that Elijah would return before the Messiah arrived, and Jesus is saying that John embodied that prophetic calling, even though he wasn't literally the ancient prophet returned to earth. The phrase "if you are willing to receive it" is key: Jesus is acknowledging that this identification requires openness to understand Scripture in a deeper way than simply looking for someone identical to the original Elijah.
