““Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.”
What does Matthew 10:21 mean?
Jesus is describing the painful divisions that following him would create, even within families. He's not saying this *should* happen, but warning his disciples that it *will* happen, because loyalty to him sometimes puts us at odds with those closest to us. This warning was especially relevant for Jesus's early followers, who faced persecution from their own communities and sometimes their own households. But the deeper truth remains: genuine faith sometimes requires choosing a different path than the people we love most, and that choice can hurt. Jesus wanted his disciples to go forward with clear eyes, knowing that commitment to him might cost them relationships and safety.
