What does Matthew 1:19 mean?

Joseph faces an impossible situation: Mary is pregnant, and by the law of his time, he has every right to expose her publicly, which would have destroyed her reputation and livelihood. Instead, he chooses the quieter path of divorce, planning to do it privately so she might have some chance at a future. This single verse shows us what righteousness actually looked like to Matthew, the gospel writer. It wasn't about following rules strictly or protecting your own honor, but about mercy, protection, and dignity for someone vulnerable. Joseph's internal struggle tells us that doing the right thing sometimes means choosing compassion over what you're legally entitled to do.
