What does Matthew 1:18 mean?

Mary's pregnancy before marriage would have been deeply shameful in first-century Jewish culture, and Joseph had every right to quietly divorce her. This verse tells us that her child came not from a human father, but directly from God's Spirit, making Jesus both fully human and set apart as God's son from conception. Matthew is establishing that Jesus's arrival wasn't a mistake or scandal to be hidden, but God's deliberate action entering our world. For those struggling with shame or feeling like their circumstances are beyond repair, this opening reminds us that God works through what the world calls impossible or wrong.
