What does Mark 9:43 mean?
Jesus is using shocking, extreme language here to make an unforgettable point about what matters most. He's not actually telling us to mutilate ourselves, but rather to take seriously anything in our lives—habits, relationships, possessions, ways of thinking—that pulls us away from God and toward spiritual death. The image of losing a hand but gaining eternal life is meant to sting us into recognizing that some things are worth radical sacrifice. If something we love is genuinely leading us away from God, Jesus wants us to understand it's worth losing, the way you'd rather survive an accident without a limb than die with all your body parts intact. Gehenna (the valley outside Jerusalem where trash burned) represents being separated from God's life forever, and nothing we own or enjoy is worth that cost. This verse speaks directly to anyone wrestling with addictions, toxic relationships, or behaviors we know are harming our souls. It's an invitation to stop hesitating and make the hard choice to break free, trusting that what we'll gain by following Jesus far outweighs what we'll have to let go.
