What does Mark 9:31 mean?

Jesus is telling his closest followers something difficult: he's going to be arrested, executed, and then rise from the dead three days later. He uses the phrase "handed over" to describe his arrest, which captures how his own people and systems will betray him. This is Jesus being honest about what's ahead, preparing his disciples for the shock of his death so they won't lose faith entirely when it happens. The resurrection promise at the end is crucial, because it means his death isn't the final word, even though it will feel devastating when they experience it.
