What does Mark 9:23 mean?

A man comes to Jesus desperate and afraid, asking if Jesus can help his sick son. Before healing anyone, Jesus responds with this gentle challenge about faith. He's not saying belief makes us magical or that positive thinking solves everything, but rather that trust in God opens us to what God can do. The heart of this verse is invitation, not accusation. Jesus meets the man's doubt ("if you can") with compassion while pointing him toward a deeper trust. When we believe God is good and present with us, we're not paralyzed by fear or helplessness anymore, and that changes what becomes possible in our lives. Whether that's healing, peace, courage, or transformation, the possibility flows from actually trusting God rather than just hoping things work out.
