What does Mark 8:23 mean?
Jesus doesn't heal this man from a distance or with a quick word, but instead leads him personally away from the crowd and touches him directly. The physical acts, which might seem strange to modern readers, were actually recognizable healing practices of that time, and they communicated something crucial: Jesus was willing to be intimately involved in this man's restoration. What's especially moving is that Jesus asks if he sees anything rather than simply declaring him healed. This gives the man a voice in his own healing and shows Jesus wasn't performing for an audience. He was focused entirely on this one person's actual experience and wellbeing. Sometimes healing isn't instantaneous or complete on the first try, and Jesus' patient, attentive approach here honors that reality.
