What does Mark 7:9 mean?
Jesus is calling out the religious leaders for prioritizing their own made-up rules over God's actual instructions. The leaders had developed elaborate traditions about ritual purity and washing that weren't part of God's law, and they were using these traditions to override what God actually commanded, particularly about honoring parents. He's pointing out how cleverly they've managed to dodge God's real expectations by hiding behind their preferred customs. It's a sharp rebuke about how easy it is to substitute what feels comfortable or familiar for what God actually asks of us.
