What does Mark 7:10 mean?
Jesus is reminding his listeners of the commandment to honor parents, which Moses taught in the law. He's also referencing the serious consequences that were attached to cursing or speaking evil against parents in ancient Israel, where such disrespect was considered deeply destructive to family and community bonds. In context, Jesus uses this to challenge religious leaders who were finding clever loopholes to avoid supporting their aging parents. They claimed their money was dedicated to God (a practice called "Corban"), which technically freed them from caring for mom and dad. Jesus is saying this violates something far more foundational: the direct command to honor the people who gave you life. The weight of this commandment shows how much God values family care and mutual responsibility.
