What does Mark 6:49 mean?
When the disciples spot Jesus walking toward them across the water in the pre-dawn darkness, their first instinct is terror. They don't recognize him and assume they're seeing a supernatural apparition, so naturally they cry out in fear. This moment captures something deeply human: how easily our minds jump to frightening explanations when we encounter something beyond our normal experience, especially when we're already tired and on edge from a long night of rowing. What makes this scene poignant is that Jesus is actually there to help them, but they can't see it yet. Their fear blinds them to the reality of his presence and care. Many of us know this feeling when we're going through difficult times, wrestling with worry, and struggling to sense God's presence even when help is actually close by.
