What does Mark 6:48 mean?
Jesus' disciples were struggling against a headwind, exhausted from fighting the waves, when he came to them walking on the water in the darkest part of the night. That final phrase, "he would have passed by them," can feel strange at first, but it suggests Jesus was testing whether they would call out to him or simply trust that he was there, even if they didn't fully understand what was happening. In the hardest moments, when we're worn out and confused, Jesus isn't absent or indifferent, even when it feels like he might be passing us by. He's often closer than we realize, waiting to see if we'll reach for him.
