What does Mark 6:4 mean?
Jesus is describing a painful truth that many people experience: it's hardest to be believed or respected by those closest to us. The people in his hometown of Nazareth had watched him grow up as a carpenter's son, so they struggled to accept that he was anything more. This wasn't unique to Jesus, he's saying, but a pattern as old as prophecy itself. When someone we've known for years suddenly claims a larger calling or purpose, our familiarity with them can actually get in the way of recognizing their gifts. It's a gentle acknowledgment that sometimes the people who love us most are the slowest to understand what God is doing in our lives.
