What does Mark 6:37 mean?
Jesus had just been asked by his disciples to send away the hungry crowd so people could find food in nearby villages. Instead of solving the problem by dismissing them, he turns it back to his followers: "You give them something to eat." It's a gentle challenge that forces them to see what's actually in front of them, rather than treating the situation as someone else's responsibility. The disciples' response shows their very human reaction—they calculate the cost (two hundred denarii was roughly a year's wages for a laborer) and realize they don't have nearly enough resources. What Jesus is really doing here is inviting them to stop thinking about what they lack and start thinking about what they might do with what little they have. This moment sets up the miracle that follows, but first he needs them to recognize that the need is real and that they're being called to care.
