What does Mark 6:17 mean?
Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, put John the Baptist in prison because John had publicly criticized his marriage to Herodias. The problem was that Herodias had been married to Herod's brother Philip, and Jewish law forbade a man from marrying his brother's wife. John spoke up about this violation, and instead of listening, Herod arrested him to silence the criticism and protect his relationship with Herodias. This moment shows how power and pride can close our ears to truth. Herod had the authority to do what he wanted, but when someone challenged him, he chose imprisonment over repentance.
