“Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!””
What does Mark 6:11 mean?
Jesus is teaching his disciples how to handle rejection as they go out to share his message. He's telling them that when people refuse to listen, they should move on without shame or bitterness, shaking off the dust as a symbolic gesture that says, "We offered you truth, and you turned away." This wasn't meant to be harsh, but rather a way to help the disciples release hurt and keep moving forward. The stunning part comes next: Jesus says that a city rejecting his messengers will face worse judgment than Sodom and Gomorrah, cities so wicked they became biblical symbols of divine judgment. This isn't about doom and gloom, though. It's Jesus taking seriously the choice people make when they hear good news and refuse it. He's saying that awareness of truth matters, and turning away from God's offer carries real consequences. At the same time, by telling disciples to shake the dust off and move on, Jesus is freeing them from the burden of forcing anyone to believe. Our job is to offer the message faithfully. What others do with it is between them and God.
